Unopened bags

Crisp storage
  • Cool, dry cupboard — not above the hob, not in a steamy kitchen corner
  • Away from direct sun (flavour oils oxidise faster in heat)
  • Do not freeze: condensation on thaw ruins texture

Best-before dates are quality guides, not poison timers. Trust smell and crunch more than the stamp if storage has been sensible.

Opened bags

Air and humidity are the enemies.

  1. Squeeze out excess air and clip tightly, or
  2. Transfer to an airtight tub with minimal headspace, or
  3. Use a bag clip + upright stance so crumbs do not hold the seal open

Do not store opened crisps in the fridge. Cold air is humid; you trade one problem for another.

Multipacks and sharing bowls

Pour what you will eat into a bowl; leave the rest sealed. A wide bowl left out overnight is a moisture magnet. If you host, refresh bowls rather than top up stale stock.

Travel and desk stashes

Zip bags in hot cars become crisp-killers. If you commute with multipacks, keep them in the coolest bag compartment and do not leave them on a sunny dashboard. Desk drawers next to radiators have the same problem in winter offices.

Parties and bowls

Refresh bowls every 30–45 minutes. Mixed-crisp bowls look generous and go stale fastest because every hand opens more surface area. Offer scoops, not fists, if you care about hygiene and crumbs in the sofa.

Signs a sealed bag was stored badly

Greasy exterior film, inflated bags from temperature swings, and flavour that tastes like cardboard dust. Retail handling matters; buy from high-turnover shops when you can.

Multipack strategy

Open one bag at a time. Clip immediately. Do not combine flavours in one tub unless you enjoy chaos.

Desk drawer rules

Cool, dark, away from monitors that heat the space. If the office is tropical, smaller personal bags beat a family multipack melting in a pedestal drawer.

Soft-but-safe crisps

Oven refresh at low heat for a few minutes can help slightly soft crisps. Off smells = bin. Do not invent science to save 40p.

After parties

Seal open bags the same night. Stale bowls next to beer bottles is how you invent sadness for breakfast. Compost plain crumbs if they went soft; do not force them.
